Professional Practice 4: Lesson Preparation
Lesson Preparation and its Importance
Description
For LINUS program, teachers are given a teacher’s module that consists of complete lesson plans for teachers to conduct their lessons. Despite that, if the teachers think that the lesson plans are not be suitable for their students, they will create their own lesson plans or modify the existing ones. The teachers plan their lessons based on a basic teaching structure that includes lesson introduction, body, and conclusion.
Feelings and Evaluation
I am aware that LINUS teacher’s module helps to lessen the teachers' workload in terms of providing them complete lesson plans for the teachers to carry out their lessons throughout the year. However, I think the purpose of having a teacher resource work is to give an idea for teachers to enhance and modify it based on their individual students. It is a bit of disappointment to have witnessed how some teachers have relied too much on the resource book and that it has become a habit.
However, I know that planning great teaching lessons do not come naturally to us. It requires time and effort of a teacher to plan lessons that can cater to his students’ learning needs and abilities. Therefore, I think collaboration between teachers is crucial in lesson planning and preparation. With others’ constructive advices and suggestions, it helps the teachers to think critically and creatively when they design their lessons.
Analysis
Lesson preparations incorporate all the other lesson components including learning objectives, teaching strategies, learning activities, and teaching resources. It is impossible to discuss about lesson components separately because they are interdependent; one may affects the others. An effective lesson preparation is the key to a successful instructional process. This is because lesson preparations are the foundation to guide a teacher in executing his or her lessons. Without a proper lesson preparation, teachers may fail to conduct an effective and meaningful lesson.
There are many decisions that are involved in planning and preparing lessons.
-
The learning objectives
-
The content
-
The students’ prior knowledge, learning abilities, and learning needs
-
The teaching resources
-
The assessment methods
Every teacher has to take into consideration of the five major components in planning a lesson. With that, teachers will be able to create effective lesson plans for them to execute. The theories that can be used as a foundation in lesson planning are Theory of Multiple Intelligences (Gardner, 1983), Bloom's Taxonomy of six cognitive levels (Bloom, 1956), as well as collaboration learning and MKOs (Vygotsky, 1978). These theories were explained in other sections and will not be repeated here to avoid repetition.
There are many reasons why lesson preparations are important in teaching. It is similar to the idea in which students are or are not prepared for the exam will results differently. This does not mean that all planned lessons are great and all unplanned lessons are horrible. A teacher can always plan a good lesson to make it a better lesson. A lesson plan helps teachers to maintain their focus. This is because it helps to constantly remind teachers of the main focus when they are conducting the lesson. Also, when teachers are clear about what they are focusing and teaching, their students will able to meet their teachers’ expectations. In short, lesson preparations keep a teacher and students on track.
Conclusion
A lesson plan is like a location map. It directs us to the destination that we planned to go. Sometimes, they may not be the best and smoothest routes but they will always be there for us to refer to.
a big no no!
